Shara Tharn was born on Chandrila to inauspicious background. The daughter of a fisherman and a barmaid, she dreamed of doing something more. She dreamed of moving to Coruscant, the exciting hub of the galaxy, and joining the Imperial Navy. Barely managing to scrape together enough credits for a cramped, uncomfortable flight to Imperial Center, she left her parents and her homeworld forever.

However, upon reaching Coruscant, one of her first experiences was to witness first hand the repression of non-humans – a squad of stormtroopers launching an unprovoked attack on an Elomin. This horrified Shara, who had had no idea how non-humans were treated by the Empire. The Elomin was severely wounded, but Shara spent the next week nursing him back to health. After this, they both fled Coruscant, having made a firm decision to no longer support the Empire, and to join the Rebel Alliance.

Shara became a capable starfighter pilot, reaching command of the wing's blue squadron, before she was reassigned shortly after the Battle of Endor to command of Black Squadron – an initiative devised by the wing commander as a repository for those in the wing whose talents precluded dismissal, but whose attitude and behaviour insisted that they could not be given the same level of trust as the other pilots in the wing. Shara herself acted as part-leader, part-warden to this squadron, which included, among others, the Elomin she had met on Coruscant.

It was Shara and her Black Squadron who uncovered the treachery of the wing commander, exposing General Ma'arthen as an agent for the Imperial Security Bureau. Ma'arthen was working with another agent, Tharrick Henescia. Tharrick was supposedly a former Imperial pilot who had defected to the Alliance and taken command of Blue Squadron after Shara's transfer. Initially there was intense rivalry between Shara and Henescia, but over time that rivalry became respect, and that respect became love. Until Henescia was exposed as an ISB agent. Ma'arthen fled the Alliance after his true nature was revealed, but Henescia remained. He had been ordered by Ma'arthen to romance Shara and gain her trust, but he found himself actually falling in love with her. Shara ended their relationship because of the deception, but Henescia's love for Shara caused him to defect from the Empire and join the Alliance's starfighter corps in a genuine capacity.

Henescia could not bear to lose Shara's love, and so persistently attempted to earn her forgiveness, and to restore their relationship. Shara knew she could no longer love Henescia, and so, agitated by Henescia's advances, requested transfer. She was transferred into Rebel Squadrons' Aurora Force. Although Shara does not know where Tharrick Henescia is now, he is in fact serving in Rebel Squadrons' Retribution Wing. Tharrick himself does not know where Shara Tharn is, but he is searching.
